Whanga Crescent Homes
Quality Linings Delivered Across a Steep, Weather-Exposed Development
Category
Residential / Light Commercial
Size
80 m² · 120 m² · 170 m²
Duration
7 days (3 homes / 2 blocks)
Scope
Weatherline System & Internal GIB Installation
Overview
Located on a steep, wind-exposed hillside in Wellington, the Whanga Crescent development demanded technical precision and weather-aware planning.
Te Marua Linings was responsible for installing the Weatherline System as the cladding substrate across three homes, followed by full internal GIB lining.
Each dwelling varied in size and layout — two single-storey and one two-storey — requiring adaptive installation methods and close coordination with other trades. Despite persistent rain and limited access, our team delivered all works safely, to specification, and within a seven-day timeframe.
Weatherline & GIB Installation Across Two Compact Homes
Two attached homes forming the lower block of the development. Both properties feature open-plan living spaces with modest footprints that required high material efficiency and compact staging.
Key Details
- 2 homes (120 m² and 80 m²)
- Single-storey construction
- Weatherline System installed as exterior substrate
- Full GIB lining to walls and ceilings
- Vertical sheet layout for improved water-shedding and stability
- Moisture-resistant Aqualine GIB in bathrooms and kitchens
- Completed simultaneously within 7 days
Challenges
1. High Wind Exposure
Elevated position created unsafe gusts during panel lifting and placement.
2. Weather Disruption
Frequent rain made taping difficult and risked adhesive failure.
3. Tight Site Access
Limited space for scaffolding and material storage required careful sequencing.
Solutions
1. Staged Installation
Panels were installed in shorter, controlled sections during low-wind periods.
2. Moisture-Managed Workflow
Weatherline boards fixed in wet conditions, but taping was deferred until fully dry, preserving adhesion and warranty compliance.
3. On-Site Material Rotation
Components pre-cut offsite and delivered in batches to streamline handling and minimise on-site congestion.
Two-Storey Home on Elevated Slope
The upper-block dwelling featured a larger floor area and a partial two-storey structure positioned on the most exposed section of the slope. The combination of elevation, height, and open exposure required tailored installation planning.
Key Details
- 170 m² two-storey home
- Weatherline System applied across both levels
- GIB lining to all internal walls and ceilings
- 2.5 m ceiling height average
- Extra bracing and fixing zones to counter wind uplift
Challenges
1. Two-Storey Access
Height made material loading and safe fixing more complex.
2. Unstable Weather
Wind gusts and intermittent rain extended drying periods for taping and coating.
3. Surface Alignment
Maintaining vertical consistency between upper and lower storeys under pressure conditions.
Solutions
1. Dual-Crew Rotation
Two teams alternated between floors to maintain productivity while adhering to safety zones.
2. Weather-Responsive Scheduling
Adjusted work sequence daily based on wind forecasts, prioritising sheltered façades first.
3. Enhanced Fixing Method
Added mechanical fasteners at critical junctions to maintain rigidity and alignment during high winds.
Project Conclusion
The Whanga Crescent project exemplifies Te Marua Linings’ adaptability and precision under demanding environmental conditions.
Through careful planning, staged workflows, and strict adherence to manufacturer guidelines, our team delivered durable, moisture-resistant exterior substrates and seamless interior linings across all three homes.
Despite heavy wind and weather interruptions, the project was completed on schedule, with verified system integrity and consistent workmanship across every dwelling — reinforcing our reputation for delivering resilient, high-quality results in complex residential environments.
